Flatbed and wheel lift towing use different equipment to carry a vehicle. The appropriate choice depends on the manufacturer's towing instructions, the vehicle's condition and access at the pickup. Ask the operator to explain the proposed setup before loading begins.

How flatbed towing works

A flatbed carries the vehicle on a platform with its wheels off the road. Loading still needs to account for the vehicle's ground clearance, damage and securement points. Tell dispatch if the vehicle cannot roll or steer, or if it has modifications that affect loading.

How wheel lift towing differs

A wheel lift supports one axle. Additional equipment, such as dollies for the other axle, may be needed for the vehicle and transport method. Do not assume that one setup is suitable for every drivetrain or that all towing dollies work the same way.

What matters more than a general comparison?

• The vehicle manufacturer's towing instructions.
• Whether the vehicle is electric, hybrid or has a specific drivetrain.
• Ground clearance, wheel condition and available keys.
• Garage height, ramps and space for the truck.

What about an underground garage?

Give the posted clearance, entrance and ramp details before dispatch. A truck suitable for an open parking lot may not fit the garage. Confirm how the vehicle can be accessed and transported instead of assuming that a flatbed or another particular truck can enter.
