If anyone is injured or there is immediate danger, call 911. For a breakdown without an immediate emergency, contact your roadside assistance provider or a towing company and describe the situation. The location and the vehicle's condition help determine the next step.

Put safety before the vehicle

If you can safely reach a suitable stopping place, move out of traffic and use your hazard lights. Do not push the vehicle through traffic or stand directly in front of or behind it. Have these details ready

• Road name, direction, nearest exit or exact pickup entrance.
• Your callback number and the number of people with you.
• Vehicle make, model and whether it can roll or steer.
• What happened, including warning lights, smoke or damage.
• Any garage clearance or other access restriction.

Check an existing assistance benefit

If you have an auto club membership, vehicle assistance benefit or insurance coverage, contact its assistance line. Ask whether it must arrange the truck and what destination is covered. Reimbursement for a separately arranged tow should be confirmed before booking.

Choose roadside help or towing

Describe the problem rather than assuming a diagnosis. A suitable battery, fuel, tire or lockout service may help. A damaged vehicle or unresolved mechanical issue may require transport. Confirm the proposed service, destination and price.
